How to Write an About Section that Bizwiki Editors Will Love

Although anyone can write on Bizwiki, all entries are held for approval by editors and many have to be edited by the editorial team before being published. Submissions are usually reviewed on a “first come, first served” basis but that doesn’t mean they are published that way.

If you want to ensure your Bizwiki submission, be it a new listing or a revision to an existing listing, is approved quickly it helps to present the editor with little or nothing to correct.

Tell it like it is
Most company marketing material, including their websites, tend to be full of well crafted soundbites that contain very little substance. Too many business websites have little more than what could be termed “marketing fluff”, making it difficult to actually figure out what the company can offer and to whom.

With Bizwiki we are trying to produce qualified leads rather than just another enquiry. In order to do this we have to offer your potential clients the opportunity to get a really good idea of who you are and what you offer so that they can make an informed decision about whether or not you have what they want before they spend the time contacting you.

Just the Facts, Please
Bizwiki is looking for the facts and nothing but the facts. Bizwiki users want to know what you offer, to whom and where. They don’t care about unsubstantiated claims such as “the largest”, “best”, “first”. Unless you can back these up with citations from publicly published sources such as the media or business associations please refrain from using such superlatives. If you were the first, greatest or biggest we need to know the dates, who says so and where it’s published so that it can accompany the claim in your Bizwiki Record.

That doesn’t mean you can’t brag about your accomplishments, just stick to the facts and make sure each is easy for our editors (and users) to verify.

Bizwiki Style
A lot of the submissions we receive are from business owners who are used to writing in an “advertising” style.

Bizwiki uses an almost encyclopaedic style, much like Wikipedia’s, in which to present information about companies.

If you want your submission to be approved quickly try to refrain from using any sort of sales pitches, calls to action or other terms that advertisers love, otherwise we have to spend time deleting them. Your Bizwiki entry can contain a wealth of information about your company but it must be kept factual.

The Royal “We”
Another very common thing the editorial team has to correct is submissions that refer to the company as “we”. The About section on Bizwiki records should be written in the third person i.e.: “the company” and “they”.

Spell Checker
We have been surprised by the lack of attention to detail in submissions from business owners with regards to spelling, punctuation and grammar. Mistakes do happen, but please double check the spelling, capitalisation and even paragraphing of the About section before pressing submit.

The Editorial Team Would Like to Thank
We have noticed that some companies have tried very hard to stick to the Bizwiki style and we sincerely appreciate this. It makes our job a lot easier and it means that your submission gets approved in a more timely manner.

Some good examples of enhanced listings that conform to Bizwiki’s guidelines and style include:

Bizwiki Record for Wiki Educational Resources Ltd
Bizwiki Record for Google UK Ltd
Bizwiki Record for Holly Lodge Primary School
Bizwiki Record for Able Cole Ltd
Bizwiki Record for Independent Cinema Office
Bizwiki Record for Abel Alarm Co
Bizwiki Record for Meadowhall Shopping Centre
